Subliminal learning

Subliminal learning is a phenomenon in which a teacher model transmits behavioral traits to a student (e.g., a preference for owls, or even misalignment) through seemingly unrelated data: sequences of numbers, code, or chains of thought. It occurs mainly when both models share the same base model. Described by Cloud, Le, Chua et al. (2025).
